On 11 August, Poland stepped up security on its border. Polish border guards noted an increase in the number of migrants from the Middle East arriving from Belarus. They have already detained 871 migrants on the Belarusian section of the border, compared to 122 in the whole of 2020. In May, Lukashenka said Belarus would no longer keep refugees from Syria and Iraq from continuing their journey to EU countries, and since then the number of migrants has increased significantly.
In November, the EU announced its intention to introduce a fifth package of sanctions against Lukashenka. Several thousand migrants from Syria and Iraq have piled up near the EU border, eager to enter Europe. Most of them have reached the Bruzhi border crossing near the Polish border and have set up camp there. Some of the people have been crammed into the narrow strip of border zone on the Belarusian side for several weeks now. They are not allowed into Europe - the Polish side believes there is no reason to enter and points out that the people are a tool in Lukashenka's hybrid attacks. They are not let out by the Belarusian security forces. Almost every night migrants try to break through the border. They tear up the barbed wire, throw stones at Polish border guards. Polish border guards claim that Belarusian law enforcers help them. About a dozen of migrants have already been found dead in the woods of the border zones between Belarus and the EU.

Damanava-Makrany border crossing points (entry to Belarus from Ukraine)

Migration crisis at the border has affected transit traffic through Belarus. Queues of several tens of kilometres of trucks stand at the border with the EU. This happened because of the redistribution of the flow of trucks after the closure of the border crossing "Bruzhi" - "Kuznica Białostocka". Some economists believe that the Belarusian authorities are thus trying to get back at the Western countries for sanctions. The queues are mainly caused by the trucks, transiting through Belarus.
